In May 2024, MacIntyre No Limits™ in Milton Keynes hosted their first ‘Multicultural Celebration’.
The idea for this day came about after a learner who is supported by No Limits commented on how nice it was that we have such a diverse team. The idea snowballed from there and that is where our ‘Multicultural Celebration’ was born.
At MacIntyre we also aim to celebrate World Multicultural Day on 21 May, so this was a great opportunity to make an all-inclusive event for staff and learners.
Thinking about what makes us who we are
Over the weeks leading up to the event staff pulled together to plan a range of activities that celebrate their cultures, thinking about their country of origin, religion and things that make them who they are.
On the day, the room was filled with many different displays and interactive activities for learners from No Limits, people from LifeLong Learning, wider staff teams, and learners from other areas like Bedford No Limits.
Variety is the spice of life!
We had a vast variety of cultures on display, including Ghana Fashion, Guatemalan worry dolls, classic and modern Artists, a Tiki bar, Hungarian life and dance, Girlguiding around the world, Latvia ice hockey, Polish food and dress, Italian pizza and a selection of food from various places for learners to try.
People really enjoyed trying all the food, colouring their own pieces of classic artwork, dancing to traditional Hungarian and Italian music and filling in their ‘passports’ by collecting stamps from around the room. This event was enjoyed by staff as much as it was learners as it allowed everyone to find out more about their colleague's cultures.
Feedback from staff and learners after the event was all positive, noting how nice it was to all be together and learn more about each other but also introduce learners to other walks of life in a fun environment.
Due to its success, we hope to make this an annual event.
What's next?
Our next all-inclusive event will be to raise awareness for World Environmental Day, this will be held in Milton Keynes in June - more news on that soon!
