Last week MacIntyre School welcomed students, staff, families and guests to attend the official opening of a new Immersive Reality and sensory space.
The new space was funded by MacIntyre’s annual charity Golf Day which has raised over £100,000, with additional grant funding enabling the completion of the project.
Callum Sillitoe, Head of Therapy for MacIntyre School and Children’s Homes said:
We are so excited for the opportunities that this new space will give us – the Immersive Reality can be used for education, for regulation and for fun. The system can be adapted to each child’s educational needs and linked to their curriculum.
At the opening, guests experienced being on safari, riding a rollercoaster and seeing and hearing farm animals.
The system will also help to prepare young people for everyday experiences like visiting the supermarket, the barber or the dentist.
Specific local places can be filmed and integrated into the system to enable young people to be prepared and have practiced a visit before the real thing.
Callum continued:
We can adapt the programme for each young person. For example, a younger child may just experience the sounds of an animal on a farm, for older children we can provide full details about the animals including their Latin names.
MacIntyre School offers education for young people aged 10 to 19 in a purpose-built school near Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire.
