Shropshire
In Shropshire we support adults in the Ludlow, Oswestry, Shrewsbury and Telford areas.
People's interests vary widely: gaming, gardening, cycling, shopping, swimming, voluntary work and socialising among many others. We've developed links with local organisations such as charity shops, the sports village, Oswestry market, Shrewsbury Wildlife and the Quarry leisure centre, which ensures people we support have great access to their local communities and are able to develop their independence, learn new skills and form new relationships.
Our aim is for the people we support to live the life they choose, and are extending our reach and connections in each area to enable people to use their gifts, skills and passions.
Oswestry Public Living Room, Summer 2023
Our friends, the Camerados, had talked about Public Living Rooms as a way of meeting people and contributing to our neighbourhoods by creating a space for people of all kinds to come together. We have tried them in a few different areas but Community Ambassador Katie and person who draws on our support, Jess, wanted to see if they set one up in Oswestry if they could meet new people, help people out and raise MacIntyre’s profile in the town. The events have been happening weekly.
Katie said:
I only moved to Oswestry in June 2022 and have been wanting to meet people and make friends. Jess is new to the area too and loves to meet new people and socialise. I heard about the Camerados from a MacIntyre event and wanted to set up a Public Living Room in Oswestry as it would be a good way for other people to make new friends and connect. I went to see the market manager and talked to the Camerados. We have been out each week meeting people and having a space that they can come to and feel they can be themselves and have no judgement. The feedback has been very positive with some people saying it is an excellent idea to get the community talking more and to bring them together, with one inspirational quote saying "We are who we are as individuals but stronger together
Jess said:
I really enjoy doing the public living room talking to all different people of different ages, I feel it is a good idea to bring people together and make new friends and make the community a better place.
The Oswestry Public Living Room has raised our profile in the area, leading to invitations to attend events and link with people and families across the town.
