In Cheshire we offer support for adults in the Wirral and Warrington areas through Supported Living, Outreach, Lifelong Learning and Shared Lives.
Warrington was the test site for our ground-breaking Great Communities project which finds innovative ways to think about care and community, pushing boundaries and learning lessons of national significance. The Great Communities project is thriving in the town.
Our strong ties with the local community in Warrington are evidenced by our relationships with a number of local businesses and organisations.

The Warrington Learning Centre and New Routes Horticulture Project provide numerous opportunities for people to socialise and build relationships, such as through seasonal discos, bowling nights, advocacy groups, craft clubs, trips to the cinema. The Learning Centre is accredited to deliver the Duke of Edinburgh Award.
The Warrington “My Voice” group is a self-advocacy group speaking up for people who draw on MacIntyre’s support.

MacIntyre has been co-ordinating Shared Lives in Warrington for over 10 years, matching carers with disabled to live in their own homes; to stay for short breaks or for day support.
Spare room in your home?
Spare room in your heart?
In Summer 2023 MacIntyre was confirmed to be the sole provider of Shared Lives in Warrington. Speaking of the news, MacIntyre’s Shared Lives Manager said
We are delighted to be working with the local authority to grow and bring some Shared Lives joy to more people.
The story that sparked Great Communities is that of a young woman, homeless and begging outside a train station. She happened to have Down’s Syndrome. Her story was that she lived in her own home and had a couple of hours’ support each week. This had been cut when she didn’t meet criteria for support and as a result she ran into difficulties and became homeless.
This sparked a national debate and inspired MacIntyre to develop a piece of work in response – how can we use our skills and talents to make a difference in our communities?
We have used charitable funds to develop a project that is strengths-based and led by people for people. Great Communities works alongside adults in Warrington who have a learning disability or are autistic, and who access less than six hours’ paid support a week.
Our intention is for people to build rich and reciprocal networks and make positive contributions to shaping inclusive neighbourhoods. Both of these elements should result in reducing dependency on paid traditional support and encouraging the emergence of new and innovative social care solutions. More specifically, this approach will prevent people from falling through the eligible criteria gap, prevent increases in paid support, and help others to reduce their hours of paid support.
The principles of Great Communities fit into the wider context within Warrington, with the focus on community-led support, and strengths and asset-based approaches. Nationally, we are part of the Social Care Future movement, and the Great Communities work has ensured Warrington is recognised as a creative, connected community.

In newly converted flats in the Wirral we support people to live gloriously ordinary lives, pursuing individual interests such as dinosaurs, exploring the great outdoors, shopping, making jewellery, feeding the ducks and creating artwork.
